The cliché "unrecognized genius" sometimes gets stretched to cover Antonio Vivaldi, who was, in fact, a celebrity across Europe in his own lifetime. Or Nikola Tesla, who was never off the front pages of the newspapers. Or Antoni Gaudí, who landed Barcelona's most expensive commissions — even though he did die like a vagrant, hit by a tram. Something doesn't add up here: either fame in one's lifetime doesn't bring wealth. Or it does, but fades away once its "bearer" has died. Or someone has already beaten the genius to the punch — in which case, apparently, he "doesn't count."

Take Ivan Polzunov, who designed a steam engine in 1763 — six years before the Englishman James Watt. It was bought and put into service at the Barnaul plant (though Polzunov himself died before he got to see it running). It even paid for itself quickly! But then it broke down, and no one bothered fixing it. This wasn't a matter of stupid or backward management. It's just that in England there was demand for machines like this — to pump water out of coal mines. At the Kolyvan-Voskresensk works, there was no such demand, because cheap labor was available in the form of bonded serf-workers.

Another example. In 1881, Alexander Mozhaisky tested his "aerial flying apparatus" at Krasnoye Selo. The craft got off the ground, but its wing broke. The two steam engines serving as its "motor" turned out to be too heavy. The Wright brothers took to the air twenty years later — but by then they had a light gasoline engine. And things got moving. Or rather, off the ground.

Hardly anyone has heard of Dr. Ignaz Semmelweis, who, at his Vienna clinic in 1847, managed to cut maternal deaths from puerperal fever from 18% down to just one or two percent. How? Simply by making doctors wash their hands with chlorinated lime solution. He couldn't offer a scientific explanation for why it worked. His colleagues took bitter offense: are you saying, they asked, that we're killing our patients with our own hands? And they got their revenge. Semmelweis was driven out of the profession and ended his days in 1865 in a mental asylum — of sepsis, as it happens.

Or take another example: the theory of continental drift turned out to be the work of a meteorologist, Alfred Wegener. Geologists didn't bother looking closely into what he'd come up with — "he's not even a specialist," after all. Wegener genuinely couldn't identify the force capable of moving continents. Plate tectonics wasn't properly described until the 1960s, thirty years after the "discoverer" died in Greenland. In much the same way, the Russian botanist Dmitri Ivanovsky described the agent behind tobacco mosaic disease in 1892 — in effect, discovering viruses — but couldn't give a scientific account of his own discovery, which was later "re-discovered" by the Dutchman Martinus Beijerinck.

So what set Edison and Tesla apart? Off the top of one's head: Edison, while not exactly the greatest inventor of his time, was the better organizer — of a laboratory, a patent business, marketing, and sales. Tesla, meanwhile, in 1890, when Westinghouse was on the brink of bankruptcy, gave up the royalties on his key patents to save the company. That's altruism for you — he could have become one of the richest men in America. And Westinghouse, for its part, didn't die either. Tesla's famous wireless power-transmission tower was built essentially by guesswork, with no business plan at all — the banker J.P. Morgan simply put up $150,000, then failed to see a workable business model for selling electricity that couldn't (by the standards of the day) be metered, and gave no more money. Tesla died in 1943 in a run-down hotel, buried in debt. Incidentally, the Russian scientist Alexander Lodygin patented the incandescent light bulb in 1874 — earlier than Edison — and won the Lomonosov Prize for it, but later sold his tungsten-filament patents to General Electric. Pavel Yablochkov lit up the Paris Opera with his "candles"

in 1878, and "Russian light" became a worldwide sensation (the invention worked by placing carbon electrodes in parallel, separated by a plaster insulator that burned away along with them) — but within a few years it was pushed aside by the incandescent bulb. Yablochkov died at 46 in Saratov, a genuinely poor man: the technological branch he had invented turned out to be a dead end.

Sometimes the culprit in all of this is... society. It idolizes, or it rejects. Every generation, after all, has its own idea of beauty. And every fashion has its flip side — oblivion. When Vivaldi died in Vienna in July 1741, he was buried as a pauper. He had outlived his own fashion — the Baroque had passed. His works went unperformed for 200 years. "The Four Seasons" didn't become a hit until the 1950s.

It was much the same story with Gaudí, just a shorter one. He died famous, more or less, but was quickly forgotten once triumphant modernism declared his work "ornamental kitsch." On top of that, he was Catalan, which was decidedly inconvenient in the Franco years. Gaudí's works only made it onto the UNESCO list in 1984 — 58 years after his death.

And finally, every genius needs a posthumous "executor" — a shrewd manager of their legacy. A reputation doesn't simply keep itself alive after an author's death — it has to be turned into a business project. Van Gogh wasn't entirely unrecognized: admiring articles were written about him, he exhibited with the Brussels "Group of Twenty" and at the Salon des Indépendants, and "The Red Vineyard" fetched a good price. And yet he was completely dependent, financially, on his brother. It's hard to say what would have become of his legacy were it not for Johanna van Gogh-Bonger — Theo's widow, left with an infant, hundreds of canvases, and an archive of letters. It was she who later built his reputation as a project: she didn't sell everything at once, she doled out exhibitions carefully, and in 1914 she published the brothers' correspondence, creating a biographical myth — one that could be monetized. Without her, there would be no Van Gogh, as a phenomenon, today.

Max Brod played the same role by failing to carry out his friend Kafka's last wishes. Before he died, back in 1922, Kafka had left him a note asking him to burn all his unpublished manuscripts after his death. Brod didn't honor that final request — it was he who published the novels "The Trial," "The Castle," and "Amerika."

A rather different example is Konstantin Tsiolkovsky. His paper "The Exploration of Cosmic Space by Means of Reaction Devices" came out in 1903 in the journal Nauchnoye Obozreniye, which shut down soon afterward. Who was its author? A self-taught provincial schoolteacher from Kaluga with no academic degree — that is to say, a nobody. He had no school of his own, and certainly no impresario-agent working for him. The result: twenty years of obscurity. Recognition only came once a new generation of engineers appeared — men like Friedrich Zander, for whom Tsiolkovsky's writings proved useful for the needs of industrialization.

In 1968, the sociologist Robert Merton described the "Matthew effect": given an equal contribution, a disproportionately large share of the credit goes to whoever is already well known. The co-author who's already a Nobel laureate gets the glory; the co-author who's still a graduate student gets, at best, a line in a biography somewhere. Alongside this sits "Stigler's law": a scientific discovery is very rarely named after the person who actually made it first. There's statistical evidence for this too, gathered by William Ogburn and Dorothy Thomas, who as far back as 1922 analyzed 148 cases of independent — yet simultaneous! — discoveries. If an idea has ripened in the right environment, several people will hit on it almost at once — but the main prize goes to whoever is closer to the center of attention.

Russia's particular twist has to do with how social and economic demand was structured there. Ivan Kulibin ran the Academy of Sciences' mechanical workshops for thirty years — meaning he was right at the "epicenter." His list of inventions could rival Leonardo da Vinci's: an egg-shaped clock with intricate automata, a design for a single-arch bridge across the Neva 298 meters long, tested on a scale model one-tenth its size whose calculations were checked by the great mathematician Euler himself, a "self-propelled" carriage, an elevator for Catherine the Great, a mirrored searchlight, an optical telegraph, prosthetics for the disabled. None of it was ever put into practice: the bridge was never built, the telegraph was left to gather dust in a shed. Kulibin died in 1818 in poverty, without even enough saved up for his own funeral. The simple reason: he worked for "the court," for a single patron, rather than for the market. And that kind of model produces neither mass production, nor competitors, nor a school of followers, nor a functioning patent system. Privileges for inventions weren't introduced in Russia until 1812, and a working system of patent law came even later.

And yet the mythology of the "unrecognized genius" is important, and necessary. It gives creative people hope that justice is only "delayed," not denied.
